Also, I am looking for up to 5 additional writers that will have a set day that they contribute to the blog. I don't have the time to do this 5-7 days a week and would like to reach out for your help. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for consideration. Thanks for checking back in and I will start the discussion off with this...

It started early this year, actually on lap 9 when drivers decided to try and go 5 wide into the turn at 160+ mph and that put out almost 30% of the field.
Jeff Gordon had a very strong car during the race and Tony Stewart took a back seat for 169 laps before making a charge to the front. That didn't last after a charge by Jimmie Johnson and a win in AL. Johnson has won at Daytona and now Talladega this year and leads in the Nextel points leaderboard.
The Yankee's came into Fenway tonight for the first of 19 regular season games. It was the return of Johnny Damon and he received a mix of boos and applause. After he tipped his batting helmet to the Fenway faithful, many boos turned to cheers. Damon went hitless in the first game playing for the Evil Empire.
In a trade that happened today, Doug Mirabelli returned to the Sox and just by chance changed in the police escort from Logan Airport and the Park and caught his long time battery mate, Tim Wakefield. It was great to see Mirabelli back in a Red Sox uniform. He took Wakefield deep into the game and the Sox turned it over to Mike Timlin and then to Papelbon to close.
Ortiz made it happen with a 3 run jack into the wind to the Red Sox bullpen.
Red Sox win, 7-3 and take the first of a pair this week and they will meet again next week as well for 3 in NY.

Can you hear the phone lines in Green Bay this morning?
Brett is saying " I think I can, I think I can..." Well he can.
He will return for the 2006-07 season.
I am sure all season ticket holders are happy and the streak continues.

I am really into the playoffs this year and I think that it is because the NCAA games were so entertaining. I am on the fence on the MVP, but I know that their are 3 great choices.
This is the brackets for the NBA playoffs. Click to enlarge.
It looks as though the wrist injury of Derrek Lee of the Cubs ends up being a fracture and the 65 million dollar man will be out 8-10 weeks. That is a tough blow for the Cubbies.
The Devil Ray's beat the Red Sox at Fenway after a nice performance by Jonny Gomes who launched 2 Hr's over the Green Monster and onto the Mass Turnpike. The Red Sox are now 11-5 in the AL East. They are 1.5 games ahead of Baltimore.

In the NL, I am sure that Derrek Lee and that new contract on the northside of Chicago will motivate him as a front-runner as well. Their are some many great players in both leagues that the MVP race will be tight.

I will tell you all that when I heard that David Wells was rocked in a minor league game in Pawtucket, that he would probably get the same. Wells was hit, and hit hard last night leading to the Red Sox 2nd loss of the season.
I was glad to see that Coco Crisp will be in town for the next 3 years and also that Big Papi was signed as well. I hope that leads to Manny staying as well.
The Sox take on the Blue Jays in the rubber game tonight at Fenway and will send Matt Clement to the mound.
After last years playoffs, I was a big fan of the Astro's. I just like baseball in general and will always be a die hard Red Sox fan. I wanted to write about the NL Central, but the race is clogged up. Here is a look a the standings in the NL Central.
Chi Cubs 5-3 .625
St. Louis 5-3 .625
Milwaukee 5-3 .625
I mean with the play of the Northside Chicago Cubs, I am amazed that they are in a race at this point. Michael Barrett has gone deep for the Cubs and that has assisted in some of the wins. I have seen some great play out of some of the players that you don't expect to see it from and others that just didn't kick in till the 5th game of the regular season. With Michael Barrett as an example, I will also note that Albert Pujols was 0-17 before getting a hit.
Last season I was impressed with Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman in the playoffs and many other of the Astro players. I am hoping that Clemens comes back to the team or chooses to land in Boston for a grand departure where his career started and also a place where he set the single game strike out record. I am impressed with Berkman who already has 4 HR's and 10 RBI's this season.
The Cub fans are looking for a world championship to match the south side White Sox in the coming years and need a push. That push and motivation came this week when the Cubs signed Derrek Lee to a new contract that will keep him with the Cubs for the next 5 years. The Cubs lost to the Reds today and below is a picture of Carlos Zambrano after giving up a 3 run homer.
Have a great rest of the week and be back this weekend.

First, I am pissed at Brett Farve. I am upset because I am not sure why he called a press conference and then said that he hadn't made up his mind. I am also pissed at the Packer organization because I believe that Farve is getting a lot of pressure. I say, leave the guy alone and let him call the conference to relay his message when he feels it's right. I was a Farve fan for a long time and I am really set back by him calling the press and saying that there is "no decision."
As a side comment that has nothing to do with football, in MLB we see players retire in the midst of spring training and also during the regular season when the rosters are set. So if it is a surprise, so be it. I hate that the Packer's are getting all this press when they were a 4-12 team last season. If Brett isn't coming back because he won't be returning to a winning team, then ask to get traded or suck it up and show the sportsmanship that you have over your career.
Don't mess with Texas...
In Nascar happenings, Casey Kahne took the checkered flag and won the Samsung/Radio Shack 500. This race was filled with dirty play again by the #2 car driven by Kurt Busch. He spun Greg Biffle out on the straight away by getting under the bumper and Biffle went up into the safe barrier and then down across the track. Tony Stewart just missed Biffle as he came down across the track.
Here are some pictures that you can find at www.yahoo.com/sports
I love the Red Sox...and I will also tell you that after a strong outing yesterday by Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield did the same and completed the sweep of the O's in Baltimore today 4-1.
The Red Sox take on the Blue Jay's at the home opener at Fenway on Tuesday at 2:05 EST. The Jay's are 3-3.

As for the Cubs, today was their day at chilly Wrigley Field. The Cubs were down 2-0 before Michael Barrett tied it up with a pinch hit 2 run homer in the 7th. Derrek Lee hit a solo shot in the 8th to make it 3-2 and that was all the Cubs needed for the win. Lee has hit 3 homeruns, one in each of the last 3 games.
Michael Barrett rounding 3rd to tie it up in the 7th.
Derrek Lee's solo shot.
With the offseason swap of Rowand for Thome, you would think the White Sox would be off to a strong start. They aren't and the defending champions are struggling. They have lost he the last 4 and need to pull it together. The team looks frustrated and I think that they will gel soon enough. Thome has 2 homeruns since the start of the season. I hope that they aren't going to break like Paul Konerko's bat below.
Thanks for reading Today in Sports. If you are a Bulls or 76ers fan, you may want to read the post below this.
Tonight's match-up is key for the Bulls, seeing where they are one game ahead of the 76ers, and they are hosting them in Chicago @ the United Center. The Bulls can extend their lead tonight with a win.
I also receive info in my email inbox on gameday's and for a full preview of tonight's game, click here.

Just because the Red Sox took 2 out of 3 in Arlington, TX doesn't mean that they are going to win the division, or better yet the World Series. I am sure that they will get in the playoffs and more than likely win the division (I am partial) this year. I am sure that the rust is there and now that it is "game on" time, I am looking for the winning streak to happen.
I am pleased with Schilling and Beckett in the series against Texas, Wakefield will come around too. The Red Sox have a solid club and when all gears are moving and I don't think that is to far away, they are going to be tough. I am excited to see how they react to a very strong Toronto club on opening day on the 11th at Fenway Park.
As for the bats, I am pleased to see that Mike Lowell made a dent with a home run and Trot Nixon tonight with the 2 run shot that they needed for the win. Tonight's final 2-1 with Beckett going 7 innings and picking up the win. The Red Sox are off to Baltimore for the weekend series before heading to Boston for the home opener.
The bat that I am concerned with is Manny's. He is 1-10 and has 5 strikeouts this season so far. This is a bat that needs to catch fire soon and make a difference in 1 and 2 run games and making the margin larger. Let's go Manny, show us your power.
Thanks for stopping by Today in Sports

Here is a some stats from the AP that I though that I would share with you today.
It is opening day in the MLB for all teams except one. The Chicago White Sox opened up last night in a rain soaked event that featured a rain delay that you could have walked 9 holes, ate lunch, driven home and showered...
The Red Sox and Curt Shilling with a completely new infield faced the Rangers and Shilling was right on. With 7 solid innings it was nice to see that he was in great form and the ankle was strong. Some notables during the game were Mike Lowell had a HR, and so did Big Papi, David Ortiz. The Red Sox look great and I am looking forward to a great year with my former home town team. Red Sox win, 7-2.
Here in Chicago, the Cubs were in Cincinnati facing the Reds where President Bush threw out the first pitch before the game. This wasn't the way that the Reds wanted to start off the season, Cubs win, 17-7
Enjoy the basketball game tonight and take care.

I am hoping that they get the game in tonight, but weather may be a factor.
In Nascar and after 16 caution flags, Tony Stewart help off Jeff Gordon for the win at Martinsville.
I hope that you had a nice weekend and I will be back with more sports opinions and stories.

Why do teams make moves and release player that seem only for media attention and for the fans to ogle over?
For instance in the offseason so far the New England Patriots have released Willy McGinest and have just lost Adam Vinatieri to the Indianapolis Colts. Does it really take a Super Bowl winner to boost a team because they can't get to the big show? I am shocked that the New England franchise would let either slip away, especially Vinatieri. When you lose Mr. Automatic you have some serious work to do in the offseason.
I have taken a few days off and posting will be here and there over the next month, but what the fuck is this? I am starting a pool for BE credits that will go to the person that picks the week of the season that T.O gets suspended. Let me know if you are interested, we have plenty of time to start that contest off. I will also post the Vegas odds on that too.
Do you know that Jerry Jones is saying "Are you kidding me...?"

The one game that is my pick for the day is the IL vs. Washington game. This will feature a big man in the middle for Washington that has to be fronted and boxed out by IL. Also IL needs the hot hand of Jamar Smith in this game with Washington. Smith was hot against Air Force and he will need to continue with sharp play and hope that Dee Brown heats up for IL. Brown only contributed 8 points against Air Force and will need to step up his game is they are looking to get by a tough Washington team with a great inside game.
Don't forget our Renter "Rockjay" on the sidebar as he landed here at Today in Sports yesterday. He is a must read if you need a great story or if he slept on the couch last night...check him out and tell him that I want my do-rag back that is on his skeleton.
Have a great day and enjoy the games.
